The adaptive re-use of a former 1929 gymnasium into a contemporary student center was the goal of this project. The facility opens through the former fly-loft onto the stage. A portion of the main level was excavated to integrate art studios and a sculpture court into the basement below. The free-standing elevator connects the sculpture court to the main and upper levels. Conference and office space, located on the top floor, cantilever out into the main space, preserving the structural and aesthetic qualities of the original arena.
